Trifluoromethane is mainly used as low temperature (-100℃) refrigerant, chemical etching agent of plasma in electronic industry and raw material of fluorinated compounds. Also can be used as organic synthesis intermediate, can react with a variety of substances to prepare trifluoromethyl compounds, difluoromethyl compounds, fluoroalkanes, fluoroolefin, etc.

Trifluoromethane is a colorless and almost odorless substance. Gas that does not conduct electricity. An unavoidable by-product of R-22 production, it is a potent greenhouse gas with a potential greenhouse effect (GWP=5.7) 14,800 times that of CO2 and an atmospheric lifetime of up to 264 years, making it the second highest known greenhouse gas.
